This is a beautiful example of mid-century American Impressionism by the celebrated Rhode Island artist Charles Gordon Harris (1891–1963).
Captured in rich, textured oil on board, this piece showcases Harris's mastery of light and "en plein air" technique. It depicts a classic New England scene: a solitary fisherman standing amidst the rugged, sun-drenched boulders of a rushing river.
While the exact title of this specific piece is unknown, it shares strong visual and thematic similarities with other documented works by Harris that depict river scenes in New England.
Please note- this painting is old, and does show signs of it. The canvas is discolored, you can especially tell on the back and sides. There is some fraying of the canvas on the sides as well.
The top is a bit dirty from being hung on a wall for obviously many years.
Aside from that, the painting itself is beautiful. It came out of an antique farmhouse in Litchfield, NH. Now it’s ready to find its new home :)
Please make sure to look at pics closely. Thanks for looking!
